- Just 2 days ago I posted a short-story entitled AMIGARELLA, drawing
- what was meant to be a comic parallel between the Amiga and
- Cinderella and describing the troubled "home-life" of our friend.
- In the light of yesterday's events announcing the sale of ATI to
- VisCorp and without intending to boast about my intuition, may I point
- out to the somewhat prophetic speculation of the last few paragraphs
- and ask you all to have a quick read. I don't know what you all feel
- and think, but the time has come for us all to consider some radical
- alternatives like the one I was proposing, almost jokingly, at the end of
- the story.
- The idea is for Amiga users to raise an "emergency" fund which
- could be constructively brought into play in any new set-up that could
- emerge. It could be that Viscorp - not unlike ESCOM's focus on the
- "Commodore" trade-mark, which some of us maintained was their only REAL
- interest in acquiring the licenses - will concentrate on SetTop staff and
- just not want to deal with us, our machines, our lunacy and the whole
- computer-market divagations. Theirs is a totally new business more akin
- to broadcasting then manufacturing. Who wants the aggravations of running
- factories and the like...
- Or, it is possible that should they be sufficiently alert,
- open-minded and available, they could perceive how, by "going
- along" with our motley yet very competent crew/community, they could gain
- popular visibility, a ready-made user/client/proselytizer/whathaveyou
- base and a wide and healthy development "farming system". If on top of
- this we, the users/owners, could yield some financial capital and would
- be willing - provided the right people (IMHO no-one better than David
- Haynie for instance) would accept to head the "computer-products"
- side - to invest this capital in an intelligent variation of ESOP
- (Employee Stock Options but where "Employee" is replaced by "user-owner",
- more later) and hence acquire considerable "voice-in-chapter" in
- determining the future of the Amiga. I don't know, and nobody seems to
- know, how many active Amiga users there are worldwide, but let's say
- 100,000 would be willing to invest $100 in this project, we would have
- $10,000,000 to play our hand with.
- And if it didn't work out,it can be set up that way, everybody would
- get their money back and put a downpayment on a Be!
- But just think what an innovation such an action would represent. It has
- never been done before.Mmedia, Wall Street and investors everywhere
- would definetely be tickled: "If its users are willing to go as far
- as this, this Amiga must really be something, we can't afford not to
- be part of this..." and more money would flow in.
- Friends, this is how turnarounds happen. Unexpected events open
- new possibilities.
- Imagine a whole new "open" situation where all "modern"
- communications/management,marketin techniques are "cheerfully" applied,
- instead of ignored like stiff ol' ESCOM did; where we establish a system
- that allows us, and everyone else, to know exactly what is going on every
- day if not every hour, what progress is being made in design and manufacturing,
- marketing, promotion ideas etc.; where every Amiga user could make a
- practical and concrete contribution with whatever means at his/her
- disposal, alone or in groups; where programmers and developers could
- work hand-in-hand with eachother and come up with amazing projects
- that could be implemented at lightening speed. Where dealers would
- get assistance from users in demonstrating the products, where older
- machines could be given to kindergartens schools and prisons (!)
- where we could have a 24hr/day "live" internet site with daily
- conferences between users, manufacturers, dealers, whathaveyou, and
- so on and so on.
- Friends, it would just be amazing! And what are $100?
- We spend that much a month (or perhaps every 2 months) improving our
- equipment buying software. There must be 100,000 of us (or more) that
- could (just) afford and would be prepared to make such a sacrifice.
- Besides, the whole thing could be set up absolutely scam-proof, and yes,
- even turn into a very good investment.
- I've spent some time researching these ESOP ideas (there is a National
- Resource Center for this), and am absolutely convinced there are solid
- legal grounds to build upon.
-
- Amigans! Turn your passion, knowledge, dedication and resourcefulness
- into real economic power. No more being taken for rides by short-sighted
- fuzzed-out, bi-atlantic corporate types. Let's have the courage of our
- convictions and put our money where our mouth is. Believe me, we will
- be heard and, for once, lisitened to and our Amiga will finally and fully
- come into what was meant to be her manifest birthright: a computer by the
- people, for the people. Let's not miss out this time.
-
- PS: Anyone wants to ask me any questions about ESOP etc., and how
- this project could be put together, feel free.
